When it comes to economic development and technology-based solutions, the interests of business attract the lion’s share of developer attention. But how often do those solutions bring direct benefit to your family members and friends, and how long does that take? The answer depends on how often the needs of people or society stimulate the search for solutions. This session will present a practical approach to idea generation that serves people first. The concepts and techniques are based on a successful program in which women and service groups identified their needs, and engineers and computer scientists developed and delivered solutions.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Gloria Montano, WISE NL President, began her engineering career in the Silicon Valley and for 20+ years she advanced through positions in design, customer support, technical sales and marketing support, project and program management at high tech companies. She left the for-profit sector to join the non-profit sector as director of an innovative program that leveraged design-based experiential learning at 11 US universities to bring tangible benefit to those under-served by technology. Now post-salary, she continues to seek to broaden discussion on the role women play in the identification, development and distribution of technology-based solutions.

Science, technology and engineering are forces that constantly change our realities. Do you look with great hope to how these fields can solve our problems, or do you worry about the new challenges they raise from unintended or unanticipated consequences? This session will present information to help you understand the ways that technology, science, and engineering are variously shaped by social, political, and cultural values that may not always be obvious to either the designers or users of devices, infrastructures, and systems.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Janna Rosales teaches professionalism, ethics and communication in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Her research interests explore the links between leadership development, civic engagement, mindfulness and dialogue in engineering education in order to address the question “How do we build a better engineer for the 21st Century?” She held the Chair for Teaching and Learning for the Faculty of Engineering from 2015-2017.
