2025 AGM and Speaker Series, November 12

It’s that time of year again! Our AGM and Speaker Series is coming up on Wednesday, November 12th!

Our Speaker Series event will feature Dr. Svetlana Barkanova who is a Professor of Physics at Memorial University of Newfoundland (Grenfell Campus) and the NSERC Chair for Inclusion in Science and Engineering (Atlantic Region). An internationally-acclaimed researcher, she explores the fundamental forces and symmetries that shape our Universe. Deeply committed to inclusive science education, she develops outreach programs that bring the excitement of physics to under-served and remote communities across Atlantic and Northern Canada. A strong advocate for women in STEM, Dr. Barkanova works closely with WISE NL to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion in physics and engineering.

In celebration of the year 2025 being declared by UNESCO as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, Dr Barkanova’s talk will outline the significance of the research that earned the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics. She will also explore how the next generation of innovators can prepare for a wide range of careers in quantum science and technology, the rapidly-advancing fields expected to deliver profound economic and societal benefits.
