Speaker Series: “The value of marine education” with Melanie Knight and Chelsie Archibald

The May  WISE NL-Statoil Speaker Series lecture features Melanie Knight, Founder and Executive Director of Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium, and Chelsie Archibald, Manager of Field Operations and Outreach at Oceans Learning Partnership.

Melanie Knight‘s talk will focus on her journey to achieve the ‘Big Hairy Audacious Goal’ of starting an aquarium in Newfoundland. She will talk about its challenges and rewards and how, together with her dedicated team, the Mini Aquarium’s first season was a huge success, that exceeded all of benchmarks – while igniting the community around it.

Chelsie Archibald will talk about using experiential learning to excite K-12 students about STEM, foster connection to nature and enrich classroom learning.  She will share her thoughts on the value of experiential outdoor education as a tool to spark curiosity about the ocean environment, allow for greater appreciation for the complexity of ocean processes, enrich classroom learning and potentially inspire a future career related to the oceans.
