Suggested Events for International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day, a time to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality!
Of the many IWD events available to you, I call your attention to three that are of particular interest to women of science and engineering. Two are local and one is international.
- United Nations Observance of International Women’s Day 2022 – The United Nations’ theme for the 2022 observance is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” and features an august line-up of ten speakers. This is an effort that would benefit immensely when women from all areas of science and engineering are engaged.
The United Nations observance of International Women’s Day will be held virtually on 8 March, 10–11.30am UTC–5.
The theme for this year’s observance is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.
The year 2022 is pivotal for achieving gender equality in the context of climate change, and environmental and disaster risk reduction, which are some of the greatest global challenges of the twenty-first century. Without gender equality today, a sustainable future, and an equal future, remain beyond our reach.
This year’s IWD observance is in recognition and celebration of the women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation and response, and to honour their leadership and contribution towards a sustainable future.
- NLOWE PRESENTS: Tarah Wheeler on International Women’s Day, also a local event, this one is sponsored by NLOWE and calls attention to the increasingly important area of cybersecurity where the perspectives of women are essential to ensuring security for all persons.

NLOWE presents a live webinar and the opportunity to learn from Tarah Wheeler a leading expert on cybersecurity.
An accomplished information security researcher, Tarah is a political scientist, Fulbright Scholar and author of the best-selling book “Women in Tech: Take Your Career to the Next Level with Practical Advice and Inspiring Stories”.
- Women in STEM: Celebrate, Connect and Collaborate is a local effort sponsored by the Physics Department at MUN Grenfell. Hosted by a university Physics student, the event intends to raise awareness among high school students and teachers.

Women are still underrepresented in fields such as computing, engineering, mathematics, and physics. Why is it, and what can we to address this gender imbalance? Learn about the challenges we still face, and the many wonderful organizations working to encourage young women to obtain technical skills vital for the jobs of the future.
Lastly, I call your attention to our post-IWD Speaker Series event with Maria Bigorra Mir on March 15. Maria will be speaking on “Effective Science Communication in the Time of COVID”. Maria is one of the initiators of Biodecoded that was founded in 2021 with the goal of combatting misinformation about COVID and other health-related topics by presenting accurate and easily accessible content to the public. This group of young professionals provide information and education, primary obstacles to equality.
