“Engineering is a Caring Profession”
with Darlene Spracklin-Reid
Engineering is a caring profession and engineers have always been connected to the communities they serve. To build these types of connections and learn about the communities in which they will practice, engineering students have been completing work terms with community groups and not-for-profit organizations. These experiences have been helping the students gain technical skills while learning to appreciate the role that engineers play in the protection of the public and the environment.
About Darlene Spracklin-Reid
Darlene Spracklin-Reid is the Director of Student Affairs at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University. She is an engineer and educator with a background in construction management, infrastructure design, curriculum development and community service. She is the co-founder of Together by Design, a not-for-profit focused on bringing together engineering and the trades for disaster response and community service. She is a past chair of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) and has served on the board of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Association. She is currently a director on the boards of the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, Engineers Canada, the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board and the Canadian Engineering Education Association. She received the PEGNL Outstanding Community Service Award, the President’s Award for Exemplary Service to Memorial University, the Fry Family Foundation’s “Top 1% Elite Award” in recognition of commitment to community service and the Memorial University Alumni Award for Community Service. She is also a Fellow of Engineers Canada.
